The 8 components (Guna Milan) that sum to 36
Each component has a different weight; they sum to 36:
- Varna (1) — mental compatibility / maturity level
- Vashya (2) — who leads whom; power balance
- Tara (3) — shared fortune, calculated from each partner's Nakshatra
- Yoni (4) — physical and intimate compatibility
- Graha Maitri (5) — friendship between the lords of each chart
- Gana (6) — temperament: deva / manava / rakshasa
- Bhakoot (7) — Moon-sign relationship; predicts future fortune
- Nadi (8) — genetic / health compatibility, heaviest weight
Quick read: Nadi (8 pts) is the heaviest because traditional Vedic thinking links it to health and offspring. Bhakoot (7) predicts whether the couple will prosper.
What score counts as "compatible"?
The Indian benchmark:
- 18+ (50%) — minimum passing
- 24–28 — excellent; where most actual married couples land
- 28+ — exceptional
- Below 18 — traditional astrologers urge reconsideration
Don't take it literally — a low score doesn't mean break up. Bhakoot and Nadi especially have Parihara (cancellation) rules: if both partners share the same Moon sign but different Nakshatras, Nadi Dosha is cancelled.
